Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta released from ICE custody, returns to family

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been released from the custody of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a judicial order, his legal team has announced.

In a statement issued on April 8, 2026, by his solicitor, Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo of Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, the former minister was released on April 7, 2026, and has since returned home to his family.

“On April 7th 2026, Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to judicial order. He is home with his family,” the statement read.

No financial transactions with Ghana Card yet, says NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a firm denial of recent claims suggesting that the Ghana Card can now be used to perform financial transactions, describing the information as inaccurate and misleading.

In a press release issued on April 8, 2026, the Authority stated that the Ghana Card has not been activated for financial transaction purposes at this time.

“The Authority states unequivocally that the Ghana Card has not been activated for financial transaction purposes at this time. Members of the public are advised to disregard any such claims and are encouraged to rely only on official communications from the National Identification Authority,” the statement read.

NRSA declares Toyota Voxy illegal for commercial transport over safety risks

The Technical Working Committee of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has declared the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial transport illegal, citing safety concerns linked to their design and widespread modification in Ghana.

The directive follows an investigation into the growing use of the minivans as public transport, particularly after being converted from right-hand drive to left-hand drive. 

Presenting the committee’s final report in Accra on Wednesday, April 8, the Chairman, Godwin Kafui Ayetor, described the situation as a major threat to passenger safety and called for urgent regulatory action.

He explained that the vehicle, originally manufactured for private family use, is not engineered for the rigours of commercial transport, particularly under Ghana’s road conditions.
