Renowned economist and academic Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has called for a more focused approach to Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
He believes the initiative should prioritize students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds rather than being universally applied.
According to Prof. Aryeetey, while the Free SHS policy has expanded access to education, its blanket implementation strains national resources and limits its long-term sustainability. He emphasized that directing support to the truly needy would enhance equity and ensure better educational outcomes.
He also encouraged policymakers to reassess the program’s structure, suggesting that a targeted model would allow for improved quality in teaching and infrastructure, while still upholding the core goal of inclusive education.
