GTEC withdraws policy directive on retirement age and post-retirement contracts for academic senior members in public universities

Following a directive from the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has withdrawn a policy directive that prevented tertiary institutions from engaging and posting retired staff.

The ministry’s directive followed a meeting between the sector Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

The minister had directed GTEC to immediately withdraw its policy directive dated October 1, 2025, regarding retirement age and post-retirement contracts for Academic Senior Members of public universities.

About 30,000 SHS graduates may get chance to re-sit WASSCE maths – Education Minister

The Minister for Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, says the government is considering allowing some senior high school graduates who failed mathematics in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to re-sit the paper so they can qualify for tertiary education.

According to him, preliminary information from the Ministry of Education indicates that about 30,000 students may have missed admission to tertiary institutions because they did not obtain the required pass in mathematics, even though they passed other subjects.

National Teacher Licensure Examination not cancelled – NTC

The National Teacher Licensure Examination has been integrated into the final examination of trainees, and will no longer be held as a separate examination, the National Teaching Council (NTC) has said.

It added that the examination had been modified and enhanced, citing, for instance, that it now included a practical aspect that constituted 30 per cent of the final trainees’ examination.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra yesterday to refute concerns that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government had reneged on its promise to abolish the licensure examination, the Board Chairman of the NTC, Emmanuel Kwame Alorvi, repeated provisions in the party’s manifesto that it would be part of the final examination of the trainees.

Suspend it now – University non-teaching unions reject GTEC retirement directive, warn of disruption

A group of non-teaching unions in Ghana’s public universities has called for the immediate suspension and review of a retirement policy issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The group warned that failure to withdraw the directive could disrupt the academic calendar.

In a joint statement signed by union leaders including Michael Owusu Ansah, George Ansong, Stanley Abopaam, Salamatu Braimah, Ken Yelibo and Gerard Anamjonga, the unions described the GTEC policy as “unfair, arbitrary and discriminatory” against non-teaching employees.

Education minister proposes national cultural dress day for schools

GTEC suspends accreditation of new General Nursing programmes

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has suspended the accreditation of new General Nursing programmes at both diploma and bachelor’s degree levels.

“The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, acting in accordance with its regulatory and accreditation mandates under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), and guided by national human resource development priorities, hereby announces a suspension on the accreditation of new General Nursing programmes at both diploma and bachelor’s degree levels.

“Accordingly, all tertiary education institutions are hereby notified that GTEC will not receive process, or consider any new application of General Nursing (diploma or bachelor’s) programmes until further notice,” a statement signed and issued on Wednesday, [February 4, 2026] by the Director-General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Jinapor stated.

Foreign Affairs Ministry denies demanding payment from family of Ghanaian student who died in Latvia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has denied allegations that it demanded or received money from the family of Nana Agyei Ahiya, the Ghanaian student who died under disputed circumstances in Latvia.

In a press statement issued on Monday, February 2, 2026, the Ministry rejected claims circulating on social media that officials asked the bereaved family to make payments to facilitate travel arrangements to Latvia.

The Ministry also dismissed reports that government officials travelled without a family representative and that a fake airline ticket was issued to the mother of the deceased.
