Pupils and teachers of Methodist Basic School in Akyem Kukurantumi have staged a protest over the persistent use of classrooms as toilet facilities.

Some classrooms meant for teaching and learning are reportedly being used as toilet facilities, raising serious health and safety concerns.

Teachers and pupils of Methodist Basic School in Akyem Kukurantumi in Eastern region have embarked on protest against continuous classrooms defecation by unscrupulous individuals.

Teachers and pupils say they frequently arrive at school to find classrooms defiled with human waste, creating an unhygienic and unsafe environment that disrupts academic activities.

Fire destroys dormitory block at NOBISCO, about 900 students displaced

A Wednesday afternoon fire at a dormitory block at the Northern School of Business Senior High School (NOBISCO) has displaced many students, estimated at about 900.

The fire, which around 2pm has caused extensive damage to the building and destroyed students’ mattresses, trunks, uniforms, books, and other essential learning materials. 

Some students reportedly collapsed from shock during the incident and were rushed to nearby health facilities for care.

UTAG threatens industrial action as it calls for exit of GTEC Boss and Deputy

Sex is biological, not identity-based – Education Minister

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has clarified the government’s position on the definition of sex, stating that it must strictly refer to biological sex and the sex of a person at birth.

According to the Minister, there should be no confusion in Ghana’s education system about how sex is defined.

“Regarding the definition of a man as in a man, a woman as in a woman, as in biological sex, and sex means biological sex. Reference to man, woman, sex means reference to the biological sex and the sex of a person at birth, settled,” he said.

He made the clarification during a training session in Tamale on the Ghanaian Youth Handbook and the rollout of the Guidance and Counselling (G&C) framework, following public discussion around content in some educational materials.

Minority demands removal of NaCCA boss, board chair over ‘gender identity’ content in SHS manual

The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate removal of the Director General and Board Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), citing alleged failures in oversight regarding Gender Identity content in a Senior High School teacher manual.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, January 15, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, stated that NaCCA’s leadership had breached public trust by allowing the content to be included.

“We call for the immediate dismissal of the Director General and the Board Chairperson of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment for their failure in oversight and breach of public trust,” he said.

NaCCA recalls SHS PE manual after controversy over gender definition

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has moved to withdraw hard copies of the Senior High School Physical Education and Health teachers’ manual from circulation after concerns were raised about a section defining gender identity.

The directive follows public debate over the wording of the definition, which NaCCA says should not have made it into the final teaching material now being used in some classrooms.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the Chairman of the NaCCA Board, Professor Vincent Assanful, confirmed that teachers in possession of the manual had been instructed to return it as part of an ongoing curriculum review.
