GIS rescues 305 foreign nationals including 113 children in anti-begging trafficking operation

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has rescued 305 West African nationals, including 113 children, in an intelligence-led anti-trafficking operation targeting organised street begging networks that exploit vulnerable foreign nationals.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, April 15, 2026, focused on areas within the Greater Accra Region, including Abossey Okai, Zongo Junction, Nima, Madina and Kaneshie.

According to a press release issued by the GIS, a total of 305 West African nationals were encountered during the exercise. This comprises 113 children, 66 adult women, and 126 adult men. Of the children rescued, 36 are male, and 77 are female.

Abronye DC, Baba Amando granted bail after CID arrest in Accra

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, and the party’s Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, have been granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service following their arrest over separate allegations.

The two party officials were released in Accra on Monday after hours of interrogation, with senior figures of the party stepping in to secure their bail.

Abronye DC was reportedly picked up by police over alleged threats directed at a judge presiding over a case at the Adenta Circuit Court, while Baba Amando is being investigated in connection with claims of false publication.

When Indomie ‘laptops’ became weapon for sex – New Plan Int. project rescues Jato girls

For years, poverty made small necessities such as noodles and sanitary pads powerful tools of manipulation in Jato Village in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region, where commercial motorbike riders, popularly known as okada riders, exploited young girls, leading to a spike in teenage pregnancies.

The young girls did not receive financial assistance from home to enable them to feed themselves. They therefore solicited prepared noodles — popularly known as Indomie in local circles — from the riders.

Nigeria warns against enlisting abroad after reports of deaths in Ukraine

Nigeria’s foreign ministry has issued an urgent warning over what it describes as the increasing illegal recruitment of its citizens to fight in foreign conflicts.

It comes after Ukrainian officials said they found the bodies of two Nigerians who they said were killed in combat last year.

Nigeria has not confirmed those deaths but in a statement on Sunday, foreign ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa revealed that “several Nigerians who have fallen victim to such unfortunate situations were deployed to combat zones after being misled and coerced into signing military service contracts”.

Interior Minister pleads: Stop sharing images of Burkina Faso attack victims

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has appealed to the public to refrain from sharing graphic images and videos of victims killed in a terrorist attack on a truck transporting Ghanaian tomato traders in northern Burkina Faso.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, 16 February, the Minister extended condolences to the bereaved families and confirmed that efforts were ongoing to evacuate survivors from the affected area. He noted that not all families had yet been formally informed of the incident.

According to him, the attack occurred on Saturday when the traders were travelling through Titao and were caught in a confrontation between extremist elements and Burkina Faso’s armed forces.

Court awards woman GH₵200,000 after 11-year promise to marry ends in dispute

An Accra Circuit Court has ordered a businessman to pay GH₵200,000 in damages after bringing to an end an 11-year relationship founded on a promise of marriage, in a case that has raised significant questions about property rights and emotional loss arising from failed engagements.

The Court entered judgment in favour of Ms Ernestina Torgbor, the defendant, on her counterclaim for breach of promise to marry against Mr Vince Kontoh, the plaintiff.

The case was presided over by Justice Sedinam Awo Kwadam, a High Court Judge sitting with additional responsibility as a Circuit Court Judge. The Court awarded Ernestina GHS50,000 as general damages and GHS150,000 as compensation for the breach.

KNUST student dies after falling from hostel building

A second-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has died after falling from a storey-building of his hostel.

The deceased, identified as Ransford Amankwah Asomani, was a level 200 student offering a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Agribusiness Management programme.

He fell from the hostel located outside the campus of the university at Ayeduase on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

He was taken to the university hospital by his colleagues with support from the police patrol team but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Minor among 15 young women arrested in Eastern Region brothel swoop

The New Juaben South Municipal Police Command has raided a suspected brothel at Dabiasem, a suburb of Koforidua, and arrested 15 young women over alleged involvement in commercial sex activities and human trafficking.

The suspects, aged between 15 and 32, were apprehended last Tuesday, February 10, during a police operation at a house in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

Briefing journalists in Koforidua on ongoing law enforcement operations, the Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Ransford Nsiah, said the raid followed a complaint from a Nigerian woman who alleged that she had been assaulted by her mistress, known only as “Queenmother”.
