The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has reiterated its appeal to the government to simplify the country’s tax system to ease business operations.
At its 49th Annual General Meeting, GNCCI President Stephane Miezan emphasized the need for a unified and transparent Value Added Tax (VAT) structure, arguing that it would reduce administrative burdens and encourage compliance.
The Chamber also called for a reduction in current tax rates, which it says are driving up production costs nationwide. Among its proposals are the elimination of the COVID-19 levy, the introduction of corporate tax thresholds based on turnover and employment, and the removal of VAT on insurance premiums to make coverage more accessible for households and small businesses.
Additionally, GNCCI is advocating for a three-year tax holiday for startups to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
These recommendations come as the government prepares its 2026 Budget under an IMF-backed fiscal consolidation plan. While consultations are ongoing, GNCCI insists reforms must go beyond revenue generation to actively support local enterprise growth and economic recovery.
