Ayensuano District Records 76 New HIV Cases in 2025; Treatment Gap Raises Concern

Health authorities in the Ayensuano District have recorded 76 new HIV cases between January and October 2025, following testing of 2,910 residents, raising concerns about ongoing transmission and access to treatment.

Within the same period, 30 pregnant women tested HIV-positive out of 1,571 expectant mothers screened during antenatal care visits. This represents a 1.9 percent positivity rate among pregnant women, highlighting the importance of early testing and treatment to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

According to district health data, the total number of people living with HIV in Ayensuano now stands at 628. However, only about 250 individuals are currently receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), leaving more than half of diagnosed patients without life-saving medication.

Noguchi makes HIV therapy breakthrough

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) has developed what scientists describe as “a ground-breaking research” which can significantly alter HIV care if other tests prove as effective as those conducted in the laboratory. 

Developed using two herbal compound extracts from native plants, the therapy is said to have fewer potential side effects and fewer long-term conditions on organs in HIV treatment.

It has a high selectivity index that allows it to target and kill the virus only, leaving all the other cells intact.

ECOWAS endorses President Mahama as sole candidate for 2027 AU Chairmanship

President John Dramani Mahama has been confirmed as ECOWAS’s official nominee for the African Union Chairmanship for 2027.

This follows a unanimous endorsement by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers at its meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, where ministers agreed to present President Mahama as the bloc’s sole candidate when the rotating chairmanship returns to the West African region.

The AU Chairmanship rotates annually among Africa’s five regions. The current Chair, President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, assumed office in February 2025 and is serving a one-year term on behalf of Southern Africa.
