His Royal Majesty, Dr. Nii Ayi-Bonte II, Gbese Mantse, Highlights the Importance of the Homowo Peace Cup

The Gbese Mantse of the Ga State, His Royal Majesty Dr. Nii Ayi-Bonte II, has commended the annual Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Cup, describing it as a fitting climax to the Homowo festival celebrations.

Speaking to EASTERN FM 105.1 MHZ on the 19th August 2025, after Accra Hearts of Oak secured a 2-0 victory over Kpando Heart of Lions over the weekend, the respected traditional leader emphasized that the football competition has now become an integral part of the Homowo festivities since his enstoolment.

According to Dr. Nii Ayi-Bonte II, Homowo is deeply rooted in the values of peace, unity, and thanksgiving. The central act of sprinkling Kpokpoi on the Sunday following the festival, he explained, symbolizes gratitude and community harmony. He noted that the Peace Cup provides not only a moment of entertainment but also an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of togetherness among the people.

“First of all, I must congratulate the organizers for their dedication. Since I assumed the role of Gbese Mantse, it has been important for me to ensure that the Homowo celebration is both traditional and modern in its outlook. Every year, we mark Homowo with thanksgiving on Sunday, and this football fixture has become a meaningful way to engage the youth, promote unity, and crown the celebration with joy,” he stated.

The Homowo Peace Cup, he further explained, serves as a bridge between cultural heritage and modern-day social activities, providing a platform where tradition meets sportsmanship. Beyond the festive spirit, the event encourages discipline, teamwork, and peace—values that resonate with the true essence of Homowo.

Accra Hearts of Oak, a club that Dr. Nii Ayi-Bonte II once chaired during their golden generation, have maintained a strong presence in the competition. With their recent 2-0 win over Heart of Lions, they have now lifted the Peace Cup trophy twice—both times defeating the same opponent. This achievement, according to the chief, is a testament to the rich legacy and resilience of the club, as well as their deep connection with the Ga community.

The Gbese Mantse concluded his remarks with a call for continued support for the Peace Cup, stressing that the tournament is not just about football but about nurturing peace, togetherness, and cultural pride. He encouraged corporate bodies, stakeholders, and the youth to embrace the competition as a vehicle for community development and social cohesion.

As the Homowo festival continues to evolve, the Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Cup stands as a symbol of tradition blending seamlessly with modern social expression, reinforcing the Ga State’s enduring commitment to peace and thanksgiving.
