Dismissed Police Officer Jailed 12 Years for Defiling 13-Year-Old Girl in Koforidua

The Koforidua Circuit Court “B” has sentenced former police corporal Emmanuel Nyame to 12 years in prison for defiling a 13-year-old girl who was living with his fiancée.

According to Regional State Attorney Emily Addo-Kyereh, the incident occurred on April 11, 2019, while Nyame’s fiancée was attending a funeral. Nyame lured the victim into his car under the guise of running an errand, then drove her to a drinking spot in Koforidua, where he asked her to assist a woman with cooking.

He later took the girl to a funeral ground and eventually to his residence at the Nsukwao Police Barracks near Ghateco. There, he gave her waist beads, claiming they were from his grandmother, before forcibly engaging in sexual intercourse with her. He threatened the victim with death if she disclosed the assault.

The victim later confided in a relative, leading to a police report and medical examination that confirmed the abuse. Nyame denied the allegations during police interrogation, but evidence from the investigation led to his prosecution.

After being granted bail, Nyame fled Ghana on August 13, 2019, traveling through Togo to Dubai. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was eventually apprehended by immigration officials at Kotoka International Airport upon his return on June 21, 2024.

Defense lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu applied for bail, citing Nyame’s status as a first-time offender, but the request was denied by the court.
