The Kumasi High Court has clarified that there is no injunction preventing the funeral of Ghanaian highlife icon Daddy Lumba, despite an ongoing legal dispute over widowhood rites.
According to the Funeral Planning Committee, the court has urged all parties to resolve their differences amicably ahead of the next hearing, scheduled for October 28, 2025.
The clarification follows a suit filed by Akosua Serwaa, who claims to be the late musician’s legally wedded wife. She is seeking formal recognition as the sole surviving spouse with exclusive rights to perform widowhood rites. Her suit challenges Kofi Owusu Fosuh, the family head, and Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as “Odo Broni”, over funeral decisions and claims of marriage.
During proceedings on October 16, lawyers for the defendants filed an objection to Serwaa’s legal standing in the case. However, presiding judge Her Ladyship Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur declined to hear the objection, stating it was not part of the day’s agenda. She directed that all responses to filings be submitted within 14 days and emphasized that the matter would be treated with urgency if it proceeds.
Akosua Serwaa insists she and her children were excluded from funeral planning and is seeking a restraining order to prevent Odo Broni from presenting herself as Lumba’s spouse.
The next court sitting will determine whether the case moves forward or is resolved out of court.
