Apostle Kwadwo Safo, Founder of Kristo Asafo and Kantanka Automobile, Passes Away

Ghana is mourning the loss of Apostle Kwadwo Safo, popularly called“Kantanka, the African Star.”

His family has confirmed his passing away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, 

In a statement signed by Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo (Esq), the family described Apostle Safo as “a true genius, the beacon of hope for many, a father to the fatherless,” adding that Ghana has lost “a gallant son and a true legend.”

He was born in Bekwai in the Ashanti Regionand after his basic and secondary school, he studied engineering at the Ghana Technical Works Institute in Kumasi before working as a welder at the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO).

 His path took a spiritual turn in 1969 when he founded Kristo Asafo, which grew from a prayer group into a church known for blending faith with innovation.

In 1994, he established Kantanka Automobile, determined to build vehicles tailored to African needs. By 1998, the company was manufacturing vehicles using local components, rolling out models such as the Omama SUV and the Onantefo pickup truck. 

In 2012, Kantanka Automobile expanded operations with an assembly plant in Accra, producing vehicles assembled in Ghana and exported across West Africa.

Beyond automobiles, Safo championed advancements in electronics, agricultural tools, and industrial development. His contributions earned him recognition as one of Ghana’s foremost technological pioneers.

The family has requested privacy during this period of mourning. Funeral and burial arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
