GLICO General Presents Ghc 2 Million As Insurance Benefits To The Families Of The Fallen Eight

GLICO General Insurance has donated a total of GHC 2 million to the families of Ghana’s eight gallant men, who sacrificed their lives while performing a national assignment on August 6, 2025.

In a brief ceremony attended by representatives of the bereaved families, representatives of the Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Government representatives, and the media, GLICO General reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing comfort in the face of mourning.  Addressing attendees at the GLICO House in Accra, the Managing Director of GLICO General Insurance, Andrew Achampong-Kyei, noted that GLICO General extended a Personal Accident Policy to a number of Ministers of state, with the reason being the risks that come with leadership and the need to provide security.

“We did not, and could not, cover all ministers in that initial effort. This was not by design of exclusion, but by the natural limits of pilot scheme. It was a first step-a demonstration of what is possible, and what ought to be”, Mr. Achampong stated.

Mr. Achampong emphasized the need for state agencies and ministers to be covered by insurance policies that will protect the leader and their family in the event of tragedy.
The MD for GLICO General further disclosed that two ministers among the gallant eight had been given a personal accident cover with GLICO General Insurance. However, the Insurance Company extended the gesture to the rest of the six gallant men.

“We are presenting a total of two million Ghana cedis. One million eight hundred Ghana cedis (1.8 million) is going to the beneficiaries of the Gallant Eight. One hundred thousand (100,000) Ghana Cedis is going to the President’s Children’s Trust Fund and another one hundred thousand (100,000) to the Ghana Armed Forces”, Mr. Achampong-Kyei announced.
Mr. Achampong-Kyei highlighted GLICO General Insurance’s longstanding commitment to corporate social responsibility, noting that for over 40 years, the company has cushioned individuals through insurance and community support.

“We have stood with communities through education support, scholarships, and literacy campaigns. We have stood with families through life and health insurance that provided medical access and dignity in illness”, he pointed out.

He further called for a stronger national commitment to insurance preparedness, stressing that insurance coverage cannot be left optional to the citizenry.
“We cannot, as a people, allow insurance to remain optional, partial, or selective. Preparedness must become the standard, not the exception,” he stated.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the President, John Dramani Mahama, for the Child Support Fund set up for the welfare of the children of the Z-9 military helicopter crash victims, Shamima Muslim expressed gratitude to GLICO General for the generous gesture extended to the bereaved families and the government.
The Chairman of GLICO Group Limited, Mr. Kwame Achampong-Kyei, whose speech was read on his behalf by the Group CEO, Mr. Edward Forkuo Kyei, reiterated the need to support the bereaved families in these times of difficulty.
