BIOGRAPHY OF DR OMANE BOAMAH

Early Life and Education

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah was born in 1974. He trained as a medical doctor at the University of Ghana Medical School. He further pursued postgraduate studies in health policy, planning, and financing at prestigious institutions including the London School of Economics, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Harvard University. He also had training experience at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Student Leadership and Advocacy

During his academic years, Dr. Boamah served as the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the Coordinating Secretary of the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Associations. His early advocacy focused on education, youth empowerment, and public health.

Government and Public Service

Dr. Boamah held several ministerial positions under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government:

  • Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology (2009–2012)
    He worked on environmental issues, including investigations into oil spill incidents.
  • Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports (2012–2013)
    He played a key role in youth policy and coordinated Ghana’s participation in international sporting events, including the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Minister for Communications (2013–2017)
    He led initiatives to promote digital inclusion, cyber safety (especially for children), and the establishment of Ghana’s national Computer Emergency Response Team.
  • Minister of Defence (February–August 2025)
    Appointed by President John Mahama in 2025, he served in this role until his untimely passing.

Political Engagement

Beyond his ministerial duties, Dr. Boamah was a key strategist and spokesperson for the NDC. He served as Director of Elections and IT, playing a pivotal role in the party’s preparations for the 2024 general election. He was also a Presidential Staffer and Communications Advisor during the administration of President John Mahama.

Death and National Mourning

On August 6, 2025, Dr. Omane Boamah died in a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash near Adansi-Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. The crash claimed eight lives, including that of Minister for Environment Murtala Mohammed and several military personnel. His death was widely mourned, and national flags were flown at half-mast in his honor.

Dr. Omane Boamah is remembered as a dedicated public servant who combined medical expertise with policy leadership. His contributions to health policy, youth advocacy, environmental protection, and digital governance left a lasting impact on Ghana’s development. He was widely respected for his intellect, integrity, and commitment to national service.
