The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has closed eight chemist outlets across Ghana for selling tramadol in doses exceeding legal limits. According to Deputy Director-General Alexander Twum-Barimah, the crackdown affected six drugstores and two pharmacies found distributing 150 mg and 250 mg tablets—far above the permitted 50 mg and 100 mg, which require a doctor’s prescription.
Speaking on Woezor TV, Twum-Barimah emphasized that tramadol is not banned, but its misuse poses serious health risks. He explained that approved doses are typically used for pain relief after injuries or dental procedures and must be dispensed responsibly.
The Commission also expressed deep concern over rising drug use among teenagers. Twum-Barimah cited a recent case involving a 16-year-old boy caught with two marijuana joints, highlighting the spread of substance abuse into basic schools.
NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to curbing illegal drug sales and protecting young people from addiction, warning that more closures may follow if violations persist.
