TikTok to Support Ghanaian Creators with Local Payments and Training

Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam Nartey George, has announced that TikTok will, for the first time, deploy a team to Ghana to train local content creators and enhance their ability to monetise their work.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on September 30, he revealed that the initiative comes alongside a new partnership with GCB Bank to provide creators with a direct payment channel for their earnings, eliminating long-standing challenges posed by the absence of PayPal in Ghana.

“We are getting TikTok to fly in a team to build the capacity of our content creators and improve their monetisation. At the same time, we’ve set up an engagement between TikTok and GCB Bank to create a payment channel for earnings here,” Mr. George stated.

The minister described the move as a breakthrough for Ghana’s digital economy, which has struggled with global payment restrictions, and noted that it reflects government’s broader commitment to empowering digital entrepreneurs.

Beyond TikTok, Mr. George disclosed that the ministry is currently working on 15 pieces of legislation, including an innovation and startup bill designed to attract venture capital and regulate the startup ecosystem.

He dismissed suggestions that the government intends to police social media, clarifying that the aim is to ensure ethical standards across both traditional and digital platforms. Additionally, he confirmed that a new bill targeting misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and harmful content has been drafted and will undergo stakeholder consultations before submission to Parliament.

According to the minister, these interventions form part of an ambitious digital reform agenda to safeguard information integrity while creating opportunities for Ghana’s growing community of creators.
