Illegal Mining Case: Wontumi to Appear in Court After Bail

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako widely known as Chairman Wontumi has been granted bail by the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following allegations linked to illegal mining activities.

Wontumi appeared before the CID on Monday, October 6, 2025, after receiving an ultimatum from Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, who warned of arrest if he failed to report. He was released on bail set at GH¢1 million with two sureties, which he has fulfilled.

His legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, stated that Wontumi is cooperating fully with investigators but warned against any attempt to revoke his police enquiry bail, calling such a move unacceptable.

Three mining-related charges are expected to be filed against him at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
