Fatal Crash on Accra-Kumasi Highway Claims Three Lives

A devastating head-on collision near the Rider Iron and Steel Company at Odumasi Ohene Nkwanta has left three people dead—including a mother and her son—and several others critically injured. The accident occurred around midday on the busy Accra-Kumasi Highway, a route notorious for frequent traffic fatalities.

According to police reports, the crash was triggered by a reckless overtaking maneuver by the driver of a BMW saloon car (GE 4700-20), traveling from Kumasi toward Accra. The vehicle collided with an oncoming Toyota Yaris (AS 3861-24), resulting in a violent impact.

The driver of the Yaris and one passenger died instantly, while a female passenger—later identified as the mother—succumbed to her injuries shortly after being rushed to Hope Care Hospital. Her young son was also among the deceased.

Emergency responders and police swiftly arrived at the scene, which was cordoned off for investigation. Injured occupants of the BMW were transported for urgent medical care. The deceased have been taken to the Konongo Government Hospital morgue.

Authorities have launched a formal inquiry and are considering manslaughter charges. The incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, especially regarding speeding and overtaking—factors that contribute to over a third of fatal crashes on Ghana’s highways annually.

This tragedy underscores the persistent dangers along the 245-kilometer Accra-Kumasi corridor, one of the nation’s most perilous roadways.
