Ghana to Honour Legal Icon Tsatsu Tsikata for 50 Years of Distinguished Service at the Bar

Ghana’s legal community, academia, and the wider public are preparing to honour one of the most influential figures in the nation’s legal history—Tsatsu Tsikata—as he marks an extraordinary 50 years of service at the Ghana Bar. A three-day commemorative event will be held from Tuesday, August 6 to Thursday, August 8, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), each day from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Held under the theme: “Celebrating 50 Years of Tsatsu Tsikata at the Ghana Bar – 1975 to 2025,” the celebration is expected to bring together legal luminaries, academics, political figures, former students, and admirers from across the continent. The series of events will reflect on Tsikata’s unparalleled legacy in law, legal education, public service, and national governance.

Day One: The Legal Trailblazer (August 6)

The first day of the celebration will focus on Tsikata’s pioneering journey as a legal practitioner and advocate. His career, which spans both the courtroom and the boardroom, includes landmark appearances before the Supreme Court, advocacy during Ghana’s military era, and his time as a corporate strategist at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). His own unjust imprisonment, and how he carried himself with dignity throughout, will also be part of the evening’s reflection.

The panel of discussants will include Tony Lithur and Thaddeus Sory, both prominent lawyers who once studied under Tsikata. Joining them will be Goosie Tanoh, now a Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy, and Nana Appia Kyei, Director at Kosmos Energy Ghana. Both men were close associates of Tsikata during his tenure at GNPC.

The evening’s program will be chaired by Lawyer Emile Francis Short, Ghana’s first Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and former judge at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Day Two: The Academic Mentor (August 7)

The second day will highlight Tsikata’s extraordinary impact as a legal academic and mentor. A product of Oxford University and a long-time lecturer at the University of Ghana Law School, Tsikata mentored some of Ghana’s most distinguished legal minds.

Former students, including Kwesi Quartey (former Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission), Professor Martin Tsamenyi (international maritime law expert), and Christopher Quaye, will share personal reflections on his teaching, mentorship, and intellectual influence.

A keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Raymond Atuguba, outgoing Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, on the theme: “The Challenges of Legal Education in Ghana.”

Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament and another of Tsikata’s former students, will chair the session.

Day Three: The National Influencer (August 8)

The final evening will centre on Tsikata’s contributions beyond the courtroom and classroom—particularly his influence on governance, public policy, and national development.

Speakers for the evening will include Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and Kyeretwie Opoku, a lawyer and long-time colleague from their time at GNPC. They will reflect on Tsikata’s political insights, integrity, and advocacy for equity in Ghana’s democratic journey.

The evening will conclude with Tsikata himself addressing the audience, offering his reflections on his life, legal career, and the broader role of law in shaping society.

Chairing the final session will be Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and renowned scholar.

A National Legacy in the Making

As Ghana pauses to celebrate the enduring contributions of Tsatsu Tsikata, this event also offers a moment of reflection on the role of law, justice, and intellectual integrity in nation-building. From defending constitutional rights to shaping generations of legal professionals, Tsikata’s legacy is deeply woven into Ghana’s democratic fabric.

This celebration is more than a personal honour; it is a national salute to a man whose intellect, courage, and commitment have elevated the legal profession and inspired countless lives.
