Minority Demands Swift Action to Improve Safety on Volta Lake

Following a tragic boat accident on Volta Lake near Kete Krachi that claimed 15 lives on October 11, 2025, the Minority in Parliament is calling on government to take urgent steps to improve safety on Ghana’s inland waterways.

In a statement signed by Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the caucus extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed concern over the recurring nature of such fatal incidents. They stressed that the government must act decisively to prevent further loss of life.

The Minority recalled a $150 million commitment secured in 2020 from the Korean Exim Bank to modernize inland water transport under the Volta Lake Transport Limited project. They noted that a feasibility study by Vision Consult had already outlined the necessary infrastructure and implementation plan.

They urged the Mahama administration to prioritize disbursement of the funds to kickstart the project, warning that continued delays threaten the safety and livelihoods of over two million Ghanaians who rely on the lake.

Additionally, the caucus called on the Ghana Maritime Authority to enforce stricter regulations, including vessel registration and adherence to loading limits, to curb overloading and improve safety standards.

“The Volta Lake is a vital national resource,” the statement concluded, “and we must honor the lives lost by taking immediate action to safeguard those who depend on it daily”
