State of Emergency Not the Answer to Galamsey – Sukparu Backs Ghana Water MD

Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has supported the stance of Ghana Water Limited’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, who opposes calls for a state of emergency to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Mr. Mutawakilu argued that declaring a state of emergency would not offer a lasting solution to the environmental and water resource threats posed by galamsey. Instead, he advocated for more sustainable and practical interventions.

Reacting to the remarks on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Mr. Sukparu emphasized that the Mahama-led administration has shown strong commitment to fighting illegal mining, making emergency measures unnecessary.

He pointed to recent successes in reclaiming forest reserves previously overrun by illegal miners and highlighted the cancellation of certain mining licenses as part of the government’s efforts.

Sukparu reiterated that the current approach is yielding results and urged continued focus on long-term strategies rather than drastic declarations.
