The highly anticipated second edition of the Democracy Cup has undergone a major change in venue and date, following an official announcement by Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, August 21.
Originally scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on August 29, 2025, the prestigious event will now be held at the University of Ghana Stadium on September 5, 2025.
Change of Venue and Date
The showcase football match, which will see two of Accra’s most historic rivals — Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics — battle for supremacy, is the headline event of the Democracy Cup celebrations.
Explaining the change, Parliament emphasized that the decision was reached after careful review of logistics, security, and the overall matchday experience for both players and supporters.
A statement issued by the institution read:
“The decision to reschedule was made after careful consideration to ensure optimal facilities, security, and a premier experience for spectators, players, and supporters nationwide. The University of Ghana Sports Stadium offers premier amenities and a capacious environment to host this high-profile contest in the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, and peaceful civic engagement.”
Promoting Democracy Through Sports
The Democracy Cup was introduced by the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, as a unique initiative to use sports — particularly football — to promote the values of democracy, unity, and civic responsibility across Ghana.
The inaugural edition of the tournament was staged in 2024 and featured a thrilling contest between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, with Kotoko emerging victorious. The tournament was praised for its ability to draw large crowds, foster camaraderie among football enthusiasts, and highlight the role of democracy in national development.
This year’s edition promises to build on that success by bringing two traditional rivals face-to-face once more, but this time with Accra Great Olympics stepping in to challenge their city neighbors, Hearts of Oak.
Why the University of Ghana Stadium?
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon has, in recent years, become a premier venue for high-profile sporting events. With its modern facilities, larger seating capacity, and enhanced security systems, the stadium is considered better suited to host a match of this magnitude.
Organizers stressed that the change is not just about logistics but also about ensuring that the Democracy Cup grows into a truly national and prestigious event, capable of attracting not only football fans but also stakeholders in governance and civic engagement.
Expectations for the 2025 Democracy Cup
With Hearts of Oak eager to redeem themselves after last year’s defeat to Kotoko, and Great Olympics determined to make their mark in the competition, football fans are already anticipating a thrilling spectacle.
Beyond the rivalry on the pitch, the event is expected to serve as a unifying platform where sports and governance intersect, reinforcing the importance of democracy, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence in Ghana.
The match on September 5, 2025 will therefore not only be a football contest but also a celebration of the principles of democracy and national cohesion.
