UTAG UCC Gives GTEC 48 Hours to Reverse Sanctions or Face Protest

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast (UCC) branch, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), demanding the reversal of recent sanctions imposed on the university.

The sanctions, which suspend government support and list UCC as “non-existent” on GTEC’s portal, stem from alleged non-compliance with directives regarding the tenure of Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

UTAG-UCC Secretary, Dr. Isaac Boabeng, strongly condemned the move, describing it as unlawful, baseless, and a direct assault on the dignity and welfare of staff. He warned that withholding government support—particularly salaries—amounts to reckless and criminal behavior.

“Salaries are not privileges that can be withdrawn at will. Denying staff their lawful entitlements is unacceptable, unlawful, and criminal, and must be treated with contempt,” Dr. Boabeng said.

He stressed that GTEC must not only withdraw the sanctions but also issue a formal apology by Thursday or Friday. Failure to comply, he warned, would trigger a massive protest by staff unions in Accra.

“If by Thursday or Friday nothing is done, we will march to Accra. Let them come and lock the University of Cape Coast themselves if they think they can. GTEC must understand that this country is governed by laws,” he declared.
