Ghanaian Medium Weight boxer Bahubali Dies Days after Defeat

Ghana’s boxing community is grieving the sudden loss of rising star Ernest Akushey, better known as “Bahubali,” who died at age 27 on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

His passing comes just days after he suffered a heavy defeat in the ring.

Akushey, a product of the renowned Wadada Gym in James Town, had earned a reputation as a fearless and entertaining fighter. His aggressive style and resilience won him the nickname “Bahubali,” after the legendary warrior from the Indian film. At one point, he held an impressive unbeaten record of 6-0, cementing his status as one of Ghana’s brightest boxing prospects.

His final fight was on Saturday, September 13, at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where he faced contender Jacob Dickson in a highly anticipated super middleweight clash. The bout ended in disappointment for Akushey, as Dickson overpowered him and secured an eighth-round technical knockout (TKO).
Video clips of the contest, widely shared online, showed Akushey enduring relentless punishment—footage that fans now revisit with heartbreak.

Reports from James Town TV and Africabox Showup indicate that Akushey fell ill on Monday, September 22, after complaining of undisclosed health issues. His condition worsened overnight, and he was confirmed dead around 2 a.m. the next day. Family members believe he may have suffered internal injuries from the fight, though an official autopsy has not yet determined the cause.

Tributes have been pouring in from fellow boxers, fans, and the James Town community, where Akushey’s journey from the gym to national recognition inspired many aspiring fighters. His untimely death has reignited debate about the safety of the sport, with renewed calls for stricter medical protocols and post-fight monitoring to safeguard boxers.
