EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz has received official communication from the management of Burkina Faso’s SONABEL (Société Nationale d’Électricité du Burkina) regarding the commencement of the annual spillage exercise at the Bagre Dam and the Kompienga Dam. The notification was transmitted to the Upper East Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), signaling the release of excess water downstream into Ghana through the White Volta and the Black Volta rivers.
According to the information provided, the water level at the Bagre Dam currently stands at 233.99 meters, representing a filling rate of 86.38%, while the Kompienga Dam has recorded a water elevation of 177.66 meters. These figures indicate that both facilities are nearing their maximum holding capacity, necessitating the controlled spillage to prevent structural risk and ensure the safety of the dams.
Authorities have cautioned that once the spillage begins, the excess water is expected to flow into Ghana’s river systems and will likely reach communities along the White and Black Volta within 48 hours. This development poses significant risks, as farmlands, crops, and properties situated along the riverbanks could be inundated by rising floodwaters. Residents, especially farmers and settlers in low-lying areas, have therefore been urged to exercise caution, monitor official updates, and take proactive steps to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
NADMO, in collaboration with local authorities, has initiated preparedness measures to mitigate the potential impact of the floods. Relief agencies are also expected to remain on high alert to provide rapid response and support for affected communities.
EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as further details become available.
