Labourer Sentenced to One Day in Jail for Window Frame Theft

A 34-year-old labourer, Kingsford Nii Sackey, has been sentenced to a single day in prison by the Circuit Court in Accra after admitting to stealing window net frames worth GH¢30,875.

In addition to the brief jail term, Sackey was fined GH¢6,000. Failure to pay the fine could result in an extra three-month sentence. The court, led by Justice Susana Eduful, also imposed a separate penalty of 500 units, which carries another three-month jail term if unpaid.

The incident occurred at a construction site in Dansoman, where Sackey and the complainant, Michael Essien who is a warehouse keeper both lived and worked.

On September 1, Essien spotted Sackey leaving the site around 2:40 a.m. with two polythene bags. Sackey attempted to hide the bags when he noticed Essien, prompting suspicion.

Upon inspection, Essien discovered 65 window net frames, each valued at GH¢475. Sackey was immediately handed over to the Dansoman Police. During questioning, he confessed to stealing only eight of the frames.

The court considered Sackey’s guilty plea and the evidence presented before delivering its verdict.
