Government Plans to Elevate Category B SHSs to Category A to Ease Placement Pressure- Haruna Iddrisu

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government will upgrade selected Category B senior high schools to Category A status to help resolve placement challenges in Ghana’s education system.

Speaking at the ADEA Triennale on Education Conference, he explained that the initiative aims to promote fairness and increase access for students who struggle to gain admission into top-tier schools. With over 393,000 qualified applicants competing for just 76,000 spots, the minister described the situation as nearly impossible without intervention.

To address this, the ministry plans to convert at least 10 Category C schools to Category B and 10 Category B schools to Category A by 2026. The upgrade will include new classroom blocks, dormitories, and improved teaching materials. However, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that budgetary support is essential to make this happen.

the CabinetThis announcement follows a petition from the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, who have gone over 13 months without salaries. The minister assured them that the Education and Finance Ministries will submit a joint memorandum to Cabinet to address their concerns.
