BECE malpractice investigation: WAEC sanctions culprit

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that any individuals found guilty of misconduct during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be permanently excluded from participating in future WAEC activities.

This decision follows revelations from a JoyNews investigative documentary titled “Dark World of BECE”, which exposed widespread malpractice at several exam centers.

WAEC’s Director of Public Affairs John Kapi, emphasized on JoyNews’ PM Express that the Council cannot continue working with individuals who have violated the integrity of the examination process.

He clarified that while WAEC oversees the exams, the Ghana Education Service (GES) is responsible for appointing supervisors and invigilators.

The documentary, led by journalist Francisca Enchil, uncovered troubling practices including invigilators soliciting daily bribes of GH¢60, supervisors receiving GH¢400 in envelopes, and students being asked to contribute to a so-called “Aseda Offertory.”

Kapi stated that WAEC provides feedback on such incidents to GES, which is then expected to take appropriate disciplinary action. He confirmed that WAEC’s response to compromised officials is to blacklist them, ensuring they are never involved in any future examination-related duties.
