The Government of Ghana has successfully procured 33,600 doses of Mpox vaccines as part of efforts to control and manage the spread of the disease across the country. The announcement was made by the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who described the development as a significant milestone in safeguarding public health.
Speaking on the matter, the Health Minister emphasized the importance of the newly acquired vaccines in strengthening the country’s capacity to fight the disease. He stated that the vaccines will be deployed in phases, with priority given to individuals and communities identified as being at higher risk of contracting Mpox.
According to information gathered by EASTERN FM 105.1 MHZ, the Ministry of Health had earlier engaged international health partners to fast-track the acquisition of the vaccines in response to the increasing number of confirmed cases.
Current Situation in Ghana
As of August 20, 2025, official records indicate that Ghana has documented 424 confirmed cases of Mpox, with one death reported. Health officials have expressed concern about the spread of the virus, which is primarily transmitted through close contact with infected persons.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and local health experts have previously advised that although Mpox can be fatal in some instances, early detection and appropriate medical care greatly reduce the risk of complications.
Public Advisory
Authorities are strongly urging the public to take preventive measures seriously. These include:
- Avoiding close physical contact with individuals who may be showing symptoms of Mpox.
- Maintaining good personal hygiene such as frequent handwashing with soap and water.
- Seeking immediate medical attention at a health facility when any symptoms such as fever, skin rashes, or body aches appear.
Health professionals have also cautioned against misinformation, calling on the public to rely on verified updates from the Ministry of Health and credible outlets such as EASTERN FM 105.1 MHZ for accurate information on the ongoing vaccination campaign and disease management strategies.
Government’s Assurance
The Health Minister further reiterated government’s commitment to public health safety, noting that the arrival of the vaccines demonstrates Ghana’s proactive approach in dealing with emerging health threats.
“This achievement marks another milestone in our collective fight against Mpox. The well-being of citizens remains a top priority, and we will continue to take decisive steps to protect the population,” the Minister said.
The vaccines are expected to be distributed to regional health directorates in the coming weeks, with inoculation exercises set to begin immediately after the logistics are finalized.
EASTERN FM 105.1 MHZ will continue to provide comprehensive updates on the vaccination rollout, case management, and public safety guidelines as the country intensifies efforts to contain the Mpox outbreak.
