The Medical and Dental Council (MDC) of Ghana has uncovered multiple cases of individuals presenting forged documents in an attempt to gain approval to practice medicine in the country. At least four cases are under investigation, including one involving the spouse of a diplomat.
In addressing the media in Accra, the Registrar of Medical and Dental Council, Dr. Divine N. Banyubala revealed that the fraudulent activities include fake qualifications from Nigeria and Ireland, falsified certificates and exam results, and deceptive submissions to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). These were detected through the Council’s vetting systems and collaboration with international regulatory bodies.
Under Ghana’s Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act (Act 857), foreign-trained medical professionals must meet specific requirements before being licensed to practice locally.
Breakdown on Unlicensed Practice
In a separate development, four individuals have been arrested for illegally practicing medicine. They include:
• Kate Baidoo, who was operating without a license at Osag Medical Centre in Nsakina. She claimed to have trained at Radford University but failed to verify her credentials.
• Ebenezer Koomson, caught offering medical services at E&E Medical Centre in Gomoa Afransi despite not passing the Council’s licensure exam.
• Innocent Tagbovi, arrested for unauthorized practice at Mighty Clinic in Madina.
• Ebenezer Sarpong, detained for working without qualifications at Goodcare Medical Centre in Swalaba.
The MDC is currently handling nine additional investigations and four court cases. Dr. Banyubala urged the public to report suspicious medical practices to help protect public health and uphold professional standards.
