Ghana’s Railway Workers Plan Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Wages

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU), affiliated with the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana), has formally informed the Ghana Police Service of its plan to hold a nationwide strike and peaceful demonstrations on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

In a letter dated September 15 and sent to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, the Union cited a year-long delay in salary payments and benefits starting from October 2024nas the driving force behind the action. They described the situation as deeply burdensome, affecting not only workers but also their families.

The Union highlighted severe consequences of the financial strain, including family breakdowns, serious health issues like strokes, and interruptions in children’s education.

Despite numerous appeals to the Ministry of Transport and other authorities, the Union expressed frustration that no steps such as negotiations or mediation have been taken under the Labour Act to address the crisis.
