GIFEC Trains Teachers to Empower 1,000 Girls with Digital Skills

The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) has launched a five-day training program aimed at boosting ICT education for girls across the country. Starting on September 8, the initiative involves training 100 teachers from various districts, who will then pass on their knowledge to 1,000 girls.

The program is designed to expand access to digital education, enhance teaching capabilities, and create new opportunities for young girls. According to Bawah Shaibu, Deputy Head of Training at GIFEC, the initiative includes not only training but also the provision of computers and the setup of ICT centers.

To encourage excellence, GIFEC will award laptops to the top 100 students. Additionally, the three highest-performing girls will receive cash prizes of GHC3,500, GHC3,000, and GHC2,500 respectively. Their schools will also benefit from upgraded or newly built ICT labs. Ten outstanding teachers will be recognized and rewarded for their efforts.

Shaibu emphasized the critical role teachers play in safeguarding the equipment and ensuring the program’s success. Upper West Regional Director of Education Abdul Razak Korah praised the initiative and urged teachers to be punctual, dedicated, and collaborative. He encouraged them to simplify ICT concepts for students and serve as role models.

Upper West Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing highlighted the importance of including girls in the digital transformation. He noted that equipping girls with ICT skills not only benefits them individually but also uplifts their families and communities. He pledged full support from the Regional Coordinating Council to ensure the program reaches all districts.
