Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, the manufacturer of the popular Tasty Tom range of tomato products, has issued a nationwide recall of multiple batches of its Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix. The recall affects products in several packaging formats following confirmed reports of product bloating, which may indicate potential quality or safety issues.
The decision comes in compliance with a directive issued by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in conjunction with National Security. According to a statement released by Nutrifoods, the recall affects all batches of the Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix packaged in 210g and 400g cans, as well as those sold in 380g and 1.05kg pouches.
Incident Triggers Regulatory Action
The recall was initiated after the FDA and National Security received alerts concerning the bloating of certain Tasty Tom products. Bloating in sealed food products often points to microbial activity or fermentation, which could result from compromised packaging, contamination during processing, or improper storage. While no consumer illnesses have been publicly reported so far, the presence of bloating is considered a red flag by food safety regulators.
“Our attention has been drawn by the FDA and National Security to some incidents of bloating in Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix pouches and cans (210g and 400g),” Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd stated. “We have therefore been directed by the regulator to issue this recall, whilst we investigate the root cause of the problem.”

The full list of affected products includes:
- Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 210g cans
- Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 400g cans

Consumers who have purchased any of these products—regardless of batch number or date of manufacture—are strongly advised to discontinue use and return the items to designated collection points.
Consumer Guidance and Company Response
Nutrifoods has made arrangements to facilitate the smooth return and replacement of the affected products. Consumers are encouraged to return any recalled items to the company’s head office in Tema or to any official distributor nationwide. The company has also provided a customer support line and email address to manage inquiries related to the recall.
“Anyone who has a Tasty Tom pouch of 380g or 1.05kg from one of these batches can drop it off at our Tema Office or with any of our distributors nationwide,” the statement said. “Alternatively, you can contact us on 050 538 4429 (Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.) or via email at tastytom.GH@olamnet.com.”
Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to consumers, retailers, and distributors. The company also emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to our consumers and trade partners because of this issue and recall,” the statement added. “Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd remains committed to delivering high quality products that meet all required stringent national food safety standards. We want to reassure our consumers and trade partners that we are doing our best to recover all affected products and replace them without difficulty.”
Regulatory Oversight and Ongoing Investigation
Meanwhile, the FDA has begun conducting a detailed inspection of Nutrifoods’ production facilities. The regulatory authority aims to determine the exact cause of the product bloating and to verify that the company remains in compliance with food safety regulations.
As of now, the FDA has not issued a formal public statement on the specific findings of their inspection or the probable cause behind the product bloating. Investigations are ongoing, and it is expected that further updates will be provided to the public once conclusive results are obtained.
Public Health and Industry Implications
This incident underscores the importance of rigorous quality assurance processes in the food manufacturing industry. It also highlights the critical role of regulatory agencies in safeguarding public health by responding swiftly to potential risks in the consumer market.
While Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd has pledged to cooperate fully with the authorities and take corrective actions, industry watchers suggest that the incident could temporarily impact consumer confidence in canned and packaged tomato-based products. However, the company’s proactive recall and transparent communication may help to mitigate long-term reputational damage.
Consumers are advised to monitor updates from both Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd and the Food and Drugs Authority for the latest information on the status of the recall and any health advisories that may follow.
