Redefining Governance to Power a 24-Hour Economy

At the launch of his much-publicised 24-Hour Economy initiative on July 2, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama proposed that the newly envisioned 24-Hour Economy Plus Authority should report directly to the Presidency, both during his tenure and under future presidents.

On the surface, this proposition appears logical and strategic; anchoring a flagship national initiative within the highest office conveys commitment and political urgency.

Given Ghana’s long history of policy inertia and bureaucratic delays, the President’s intention could be perceived as a way to insulate this important initiative from red tape, inter-ministerial conflicts and administrative complacency.

BoG Moves to Regulate Crypto Exchanges: Governor Says ‘If It Can’t Be Stopped, It Must Be Managed’

The Bank of Ghana is finalizing a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency platforms and other Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama has announced.Addressing stakeholders at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting, Dr. Asiama said the rapid growth of digital assets demands regulatory clarity to manage emerging risks in the financial system.

“…Crypto is like the air we breathe — you can’t stop it. So let’s regulate it properly,” he stated. “We are working on a framework that aligns with our Anti-Money Laundering and Financial Stability mandates.”

According to the Governor, the BoG has engaged with key institutions including the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) and the Ministry of Finance to build a coordinated oversight structure.

Kufuor laments being sidelined by NPP

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has voiced strong concerns about his exclusion from key activities within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressing disappointment over what he described as being sidelined by his own party.

Gov’t misses target in T-bills auction once more, interest rates rise.

The government failed to meet its treasury bills target for the seventh consecutive week.According to the auction results by the Bank of Ghana, the government missed the target by 22.82%. It received GH¢6.12 billion, falling short of the target of GH¢7.525 billion.

The chunk of the bids again came from the 91-day bill, with investors offering GH¢3.71 billion. This represented 60.56% of the total bids. The uptake was GH¢3.633 billion. For the 182-day bill, investors tendered in only GH¢814.85 million. A little over GH¢804 million of the bids were accepted. The 364-day bill saw bids worth GH¢1.60 billion tendered. The treasury, however, accepted only GH¢100.99 million of the bids.
