NPP orders arrests of NDC officials over ‘death threats’ during Akwatia by-election.

Some top officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) been charged by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of threatening to kill its members and committing violent crimes against them therefore calling for quick police action.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong on Wednesday, September 3, the NDC First National Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka and Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu were accused of threatening National Organizer of the NPP Henry Nana Boakye, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The statement further asserted that the third national vice chairman of the NPP Alhaji Osman Masawudu, was physically assaulted by Chief Azorka and his companions, calling the incident “unprovoked, reckless, and damaging to Ghana’s democratic credentials.”

“Such violent conduct by no mean person than a national officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of our democracy and has the potential to create further insecurity in the country in the face of Ghana’s recent decline in the Global Peace Index Ranking,” the statement said.

The NPP called on the Inspector-General of Police to order the arrest and prosecution of those involved, including those shown in social media videos that went viral, and declared that it will formally protest to the Ghana Police Service.

The party warned that failure to take immediate action could create a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s political system and urged that the alleged threats and attacks must not go unpunished.
