Ghana Steps Up Fight Against Illegal Mining; Hundreds of Excavators Seized—Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced intensified efforts to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has severely damaged Ghana’s environment.

At a media briefing on September 10, he revealed that a national task force has been actively cracking down on these operations.

The task force has seized hundreds of excavators, water pumps, and other heavy machinery used in illegal mining.

These actions are aimed at disrupting the networks that have polluted rivers and degraded land across the country.

Mahama also shared that nine forest reserves previously overtaken by illegal miners have now been reclaimed. He emphasized that protecting Ghana’s natural resources is essential for public health, economic stability, and the well-being of future generations.

The President assured citizens that the government will continue this fight while working with local communities to promote responsible and sustainable mining practice.
