Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the government will embark on a comprehensive refurbishment of existing sports facilities while also moving ahead with plans to build seven new stadiums next year, in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge.
Currently, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi remain shut for renovations, while several other venues continue to deteriorate due to years of neglect. Even the Accra Sports Stadium—the only ground cleared to host CAF and FIFA matches—has restricted sections because of safety concerns.
Speaking to Channel One, Adams stressed that the works will go beyond surface-level improvements. “We are not just going to renovate, we are going to refurbish,” he said. He criticized previous renovation efforts, noting that large sums had been spent in the past without visible results.
“We believe the stadia we already have must be upgraded properly to a standard that is truly acceptable,” he added.
In addition to refurbishment, the Minister confirmed the government’s commitment to expand sports infrastructure by constructing new stadiums in regions currently underserved.
