Victor Smith Urges NDC Leaders to Hold Off on Succession Talks

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has advised senior figures within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to refrain from initiating early campaigns to succeed President John Dramani Mahama.

According to reports, prominent party members such as Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia have begun laying the groundwork for future presidential bids. Smith, speaking on Channel One TV’s “Face to Face” on September 23, described these actions as premature and potentially disruptive.

He acknowledged that some individuals may be positioning themselves for future leadership roles but emphasized that such discussions are happening too soon, especially since Mahama’s current term has barely begun.

Smith warned that early succession efforts could divert attention from the administration’s development goals. He urged party members to focus on supporting Mahama’s agenda rather than engaging in internal political maneuvering.

“They’re jumping the gun,” Smith said. “If too many people start campaigning now, it could distract from the real work of nation-building and derail the president’s vision.”

He concluded by reaffirming Mahama’s commitment to meaningful progress, stating that the president’s plans go beyond mere political promises.
